Introducing the Characters

The Locksmith’s Dream is filled with mysterious stories and curious characters that you can investigate and meet when exploring the gorgeous 17th century Manor house Treowen.

There are guests and other visitors of course, but the strangest are those who are ‘of the house’. Those who have slept in the house too long, eaten and drunk too deeply of its food, and become entranced by the objects that come to it. They have been part of the house for a long time, as much a part of its chambers and corridors as the wood panelling and sturdy floorboards.

As a guest at Treowen, you will speak to these characters, discover their stories, perhaps help or even hinder them, as always in the Locksmith’s Dream, the choice (and consequences) are wholly yours.

The Curator

“I keep the collection here at Treowen .. and try and keep the guests from getting supressed by the Inspector.”

No one knows when the Curator came to Treowen, or whether they have always been there. A creature of habit and obsession the Curator is entranced and bound by the objects that fill Treowen. They compile never ending lists to attempt categorisation of the house and everything in it. They roam the halls and rooms labelling and relabelling the objects, and sometimes guests if they stand still for too long. They are frequently at odds with the Inspector whose need to place dangerous knowledge under lock and key profoundly offends.

‘Mr’ Hatch

“Welcome, they call me Hatch … I deal in gossip, secrets and things that are forgotten.”

An inveterate gossip, Hatch’s nest is in the Flint and Wheel pub. For the the right price, a story or juicy memory, he can help to enlighten and guide, but are you prepared to pay the price?

Hawthorn

“ I am the servant of the house, we are here welcoming people to Treowen, to explore and uncover all sorts of very strange and wonderful things.”

Perhaps the one who has been with the house for the longest time, they know all the secret corners, the needs of the house and its inhabitants. They have seen the cycles of visiting guests repeat, and whilst discreet to a fault, they cannot always tell when one ends and another begins.

The Inspector

Aliis Si Licet, Tibi Non Licet

Notoriously camera shy, the Inspector is the representative of the Suppression Bureau under whose auspices the gatherings at Treowen take place.

The Suppression Bureau is a British government agency dedicated to confiscating and censoring any materials related to the invisible arts and the existence of other histories, and apprehending any and all occult practitioners. Their motto roughly translates as “Even though it is permitted for others, it isn’t permitted for you”.

They are not of the house, and are nominally a guest. Although disapproving of such gatherings, they would rather have a clear view of what is said and done, to document, to mark and guide than have such things out of sight in the shadows.

The Chef

“This was the Lady’s favourite dish, there was that scandal of course, but enough of that…”

The Chef is a creature of solicitous care, and the ancient unbreakable laws of hospitality. Their concern is the comfort and delight of the house guests, whether that be a hot drink of something coming in from the cold, or a gentle recommendation.

Having fed the Wheelocks and their guests for an unspecified years, they have, of course, seen many strange things in the house, and at times have even been involved in the intrigues of the guests.

The Dailies

“Oh dear, you are in a bit of a pickle aren’t you, well let’s see what we can do…”

For the comfort of the guests and the smooth running of the house there is a rotating cast of day servants. What they’ve seen and how they can help and guide you will have to discover yourselves.
